How Solar Panels Work: Harnessing the Power of the Sun

Solar PV (photovoltaic) panels are a rapidly growing source of renewable energy and are most commonly installed on rooftops. They are used to convert daylight / sunlight into usable electricity without producing carbon emissions, that can be used to power your home, businesses, and even vehicles.  But how exactly do solar panels work?

Daylight / Sunlight Activation

Solar Panels capture daylight.

Electricity Generation

Daylight / Sunlight’s energy knocks electrons loose in solar cells, creating an electric current.

Direct Current (DC) Production

This electric current is direct current and then is converted by an inverter into alternating current (AC) for home use.

Power Supply

The converted electricity powers your home – appliances and devices.

Excess Energy Management

Any surplus power can be then stored in batteries or sent back to the grid.

How it works
Solar Panels

Collectors capture the sun’s radiation and they send the energy to your Inverter. The energy is converted by the Inverter from DC to AC, which is used in your home.

Inverter

Excess energy will also be stored by your battery for use at night.

Smart Meter

Your system is future-proofed to provide energy for EV Chargers to power an Electric Car.

ESB Grid

Excess energy produced by your system can be sold back to the national grid.

Battery

Any surplus power can be then stored in batteries or sent back to the grid.

The Science behind Solar Panels

Power your home with FREE Electricity!

At the heart of a solar panel is a material called a photovoltaic cell, or PV cell for short. PV cells are made of semiconductor materials, such as silicon, which have unique electrical properties that allow them to absorb light and convert it into electricity.

When daylight hits a PV cell, it causes electrons in the semiconductor material to become excited and move around, creating an electrical current.

The PV cell then captures this current and sends it to a solar inverter, which converts the DC (direct current) electricity into AC (alternating current) electricity that can be used to power homes and businesses.

Types of Solar Panels

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels, also known as Solar PV have the incredible ability to capture daylight rays and convert them into energy that you can us to power your home.

At green electric we only use the most efficient monocrystalline panels from leading manufacturers.

Solar panel systems can also vary in size, depending on the amount of electricity they need to generate. Larger systems are typically used for commercial and industrial applications, while smaller systems are used for residential homes and smaller businesses.
